Through his second-annual One in Worship Christian conference on June 10 & 11 at Detroit’s Ford Field, Bishop Andrew Merritt wants to touch the hearts and minds of people everywhere, bringing them closer to Christ and each other.

But the founder of Straight Gate International Church knows that before some can be nourished by the Lord’s message, they must actually be fed.

That’s why just hours before One in Worship begins, Bishop Merritt and his congregation will be distributing more than 10 truckloads of food — enough food for 10,000 families — to those in need. Distribution will take place Friday, June 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Straight Gate International Church, 10100 Grand River in Detroit. The food is being provided with the help of Feed The Children Ministries out of Oklahoma.

“This is all part of our ministry,” Bishop Merritt said. “This year we’re distributing food in conjunction with our international One in Worship event, but we as a church provide help to the poor on a regular basis. This is just one of our ministries.”

Larry Jones, founder of Feed The Children, is expected to assist Bishop Merritt and his congregation in distributing the 10,000 boxes of nonperishable food to the masses. Organizations such as Black Family Development and Focus Hope will be contacted so that some of their more needy families can be helped.

The Feed The Children project at Straight Gate is one of a series of events hosted by Bishop Merritt over a three-day period in June. The first event — Youth in Worship — will take place the night before the food distribution at Straight Gate from 5-8 p.m.. The main event — One in Worship — will be June 10 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and all day June 11 from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Ford Field. Youth In Worship invites youngsters, teens and twenty-somethings to enjoy some of the hottest Christian Worship music from exciting new young artists, including the Billboard Chart-topping Kierra “KiKi” Sheard, the Detroit-bred Ramiyah, 21-03, Rock Nation, Antwaun Stanley, Cherise Miles, Marvin Winans Jr.. The remarkable Israel Houghton also will help set the musical tone, while Bishop Liston Page of New Jersey’s Highway Church will center the evening’s prayer.

One in Worship, the two-day Christian conference filled with music, aims to draw 50,000 people of every race, color and denomination to Ford Field on June 10 & 11. Last year the powerfully inspiring ministry touched tens of thousands with its scripture-driven music and soul-touching prayer.

Among those who will set the religious tone for One in Worship 2005, are Bishop Merritt, his wife and ministry partner, Pastor Viveca Merritt, Pastor Paula White of Without Walls International Church in Tampa, Fla., Bishop Joseph Garlington of Covenant Church in Pittsburgh, Pastor Sheryl Brady of The River Church in Raleigh, N.C., Apostle Barbara Yoder of Shekinah Christian Church in Ann Arbor, Dr. Pat Francis of the Kingdom Covenant Centre in greater Toronto, Dr. Jordan S. Rubin. . . and others.

Worship leaders who will sing praise to the Lord include: Israel Houghton, Phil Driscoll, Judy Jacobs, Martha Munizzi, Morris Chapman, Robert Stearns, and Vicki Yohe — all of whom performed at the first One In Worship. Alvin Slaughter, Byron Cage, J. Moss, Stephen Hurd, Reba Rambo, Antwaun Stanley and Mary Alessi will join the mix this year.

A special guest, the incomparable Dino Kartsonakis, will dazzle the crowds with an internationally acclaimed piano performance.
