Russia’s New Religious Persecution is Economic Oppression

Ellsworth, KS (PRWEB) December 23, 2004

After the Soviet communist regime crumbled in 1991, Russia adopted a constitution that officially allowed for freedom of religion. But the thirty faithful members of the eleven-year-old Light of Christ Church in St. Petersburg, Russia, has first-hand experience that this freedom is often in name only. So far, this “little church that could” has successfully overcome run-ins with the Russian mafia, interference by corrupt Russian government officials, and challenges with members of the Russian Orthodox Church. Today, with true religious persecution a thing of the past, it faces one last hurdle—economic oppression. They simply cannot afford a place to meet. And without one, the church may have to disband altogether, at a time of year when their American counterparts don’t think twice about having a place to celebrate Christmas.

Eleven years ago in 1993, Ray Geide, an American missionary from Kansas, moved his family to Russia, the world’s largest country, where less than one percent of the population claims faith in Christ. Geide and his wife Deanna planted the Light of Christ Church in the southeastern part of St. Petersburg, Russia, a large urban city of almost five million people.

Despite having overcome a number of significant hurdles since its inception, the church Geide planted is in danger of closing its doors. The membership is extremely poor and can’t afford to cover its basic expenses. The hard fact is that many mission churches cannot exist without outside help, especially in economically oppressive countries like Russia. Geide’s goal is to raise at least U.S. $ 60,000 so the church can purchase a meeting place and create some self-sufficiency and stability for its congregation.

The church had humble beginnings, with just two converts meeting in a community center, but quickly grew to an astounding 70 people within three years, including many alcoholic teenagers and even a few drug dealers. “We try to reach everybody but we were mostly able to reach children who hadn’t already been indoctrinated by Russian communist atheism,” explains Geide. “We basically raised children. I was like a father to a lot of them,” he adds. In fact, Sergei Koseref, the church’s current pastor, was just a teenager when he first converted and began attending the church.

Over the years, the church had to move several times. When the community center became too small, they met in Geide’s apartment. Geide’s own place was inadequate for a growing church, so he purchased a building for the church to meet in, but even that didn’t provide the security he’d hoped for. No sooner had they moved in, but the Russian mafia showed up, trying to extort money. Geide stood up to them, but the mafia proceeded to make life miserable for the little church by disconnecting their electricity, defacing their property. They even broke in and stole thousands of dollars worth of computers, musical equipment, and supplies.

As if that weren’t enough, the church was antagonized by corrupt city officials. Even though Geide now owned the building the church met in, he had to rent the land from the city government because all land in St. Petersburg is owned by the city. One corrupt city official refused to renew the land rental agreement, and the church’s building was confiscated. “This official accused me of being a drug kingpin and member of the mafia,” Geide recalled. “I couldn’t believe it!” The charges were, of course, groundless, but once again, the little church found itself without a home.

The church even had run-ins with Russian Orthodox people while conducting evangelism through street preaching. “They would say, ‘We have our own Christ,’ referring to the Orthodox Christ. They didn’t want to hear about what they called ‘the American Christ,’ even though I assured them the Christ I preached is the Christ of the whole world, not just of America.”

In Russia, the Orthodox Church has been known to coerce government officials to help them shut Protestant churches down in small Russian villages. Geide found that the best policy was to keep a low profile around the Orthodox Church. “If they don’t know you exist or they don’t feel threatened by you, they will not come after you,” he says. “We did not actively pursue Orthodox members, because there are plenty of lost people who are not Orthodox.” Fortunately, the Orthodox Church does not have such a stranglehold on the Russian government in cities like St. Petersburg, and the church’s run-ins with them were limited.

After nine long months without a meeting place following the loss of their building, the church eventually found an apartment to rent and currently holds services there. But now the landlord wants to sell their apartment, and he’s not alone, with real estate prices having tripled in the last five years. With everyone selling, there are very few apartments available to rent.

After living in Russia for seven years over a nine-year period, Geide has learned the hard way what works and what doesn’t, and the solution is to purchase an apartment for the church to meet in. “It’s cheaper than buying a building and doesn’t have the same legal hassles and red tape,“ Geide explains. “You don’t have to pay off the city because they don’t own the land. And, apartments have far less restrictions and complications. Because of this, many churches in St. Petersburg now meet in purchased apartments.” This clear solution, however, is out of reach for this little church.

In St. Petersburg, it would require $ 850 per month to pay expenses for a three-room apartment to hold their modest congregation of 30 people. Given the average Russian income, the church would need at least 200 members in order to collect this sum through congregation offerings. This is assuming that the ratio of adults to children is 1 to 3, and that every adult tithes—an ideal church. But, if the church had 200 members, they would need a much larger apartment, which costs two or three times more. Then, in order to pay for the larger apartment, the church would have to have not 200, but 400 to 600 members, which would mean they would need an even bigger space. This vicious cycle guarantees that no matter how many members the church has, it will not be able to support itself.

“It’s hard for churches to exist at all because of problems with the mafia, corrupt officials, and the Orthodox Church. And here is this little church that has completely overcome all of these challenges. That’s really saying something,” says Geide. “After how far they’ve come, I’d hate for this to be the nail in the coffin,” he laments. While not religious persecution as we know it, economic oppression and an inability to be self-sufficient still poses a serious problem for many Protestant Christian churches.

A good pastor, Geide points to Scripture as the answer. The Bible says the Apostle Paul had a similar problem with a church that was too poor to support itself. So Paul commanded other churches “upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gathering when I come.” (1 Corinthians 16:2) This collection was to support the church at Jerusalem, a church that could not support itself. Geide endeavors to follow this Scriptural principle in Russia.

Local Church Hosts Citywide “Stop the Violence” Prayer Service

(PRWEB) January 1, 2005

We have just endured a difficult year in our city, struggling against the onslaught of street violence and the increasing drug market and sexually oriented businesses here in our city. Enough is enough! Satan is alive and well in the city of Louisville. We at South Louisville Christian Church are compelled to do something about it. We invite every church in the city of Louisville to join us at South Louisville Christian Church in a Blessed in the City prayer gathering on Sunday evening, January 2nd, at 6:00 PM. If you cannot attend, we ask that you gather in your home churches or take time out at 6:00 PM to pray. Let us unite as a body of believers and pour out our hearts to God, crying out to Him for His richest blessings for our city, seeking out His will in the new year and discovering God’s plan for our churches. Let us bathe this epidemic of drugs, violence and immorality in prayer, trusting completely in the power of God to overcome this demonic work!

Perhaps this would be a great opportunity for the believers in Christ to come together, to forge new relationships and new ministries, to unite in the effort of fulfilling the Great Commission? Along with the prayer gatherings, let’s seek out servant evangelism opportunities, putting feet to our faith and action to our words. The opportunities are endless, for “NOTHING is impossible with God” (Luke 1:37).

If you are interested, pray about this and let God reveal to you His plan. Then call (361-2379) or e-mail (southlouisville@aol.com) so we can add you to the list of those gathering under the Deuteronomy 28:3 banner “Blessed in the City”. We look forward to hearing from you.

Worse Than Tsunami, Trade Protectionism Hurts Third World Citizens

(PRWEB) January 28, 2005

Last Thursday, I was heartened to read the news that my church, Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, KY, had collected $ 732,000 from its members (beyond its weekly giving) for tsunami relief in Southeast Asia. That partially offset the news I had read the previous Thursday– as reported in the Wall Street Journal– that tariffs imposed on Sri Lanka were nearly $ 250,000,000 in 2003.

Nearly all of that amount was taxes imposed on the Sri Lankan textile industry. And the amount imposed on that one foreign industry exceeded all of the tariffs imposed on all trade with all six Scandinavian countries– despite the fact that those countries export nearly 12 times more to the U.S., have about 10 times more GDP than Sri Lanka’s, and have people whose per capita incomes are far higher than those in Sri Lanka.

Why does this occur?

The textile industry in this country is one of many special interest groups that benefits from having their competition restricted. They and their politicians find it favorable to impose discriminatory taxes on foreign producers and American consumers.

In contrast to the obvious benefits for politicians and the protected industry, the costs imposed are subtle. How many consumers know that they pay significantly higher prices for clothing because of these laws? How many voters care that foreign workers and investors in poor countries are impeded in their ability to sell product within the wealthiest market in the world?

Because Christians tend to pay almost exclusive attention to relatively few (albeit important) issues, they often ignore other important policies. The passions of the Religious Right flair on issues of social morality and abortion, but they rarely think about issues of economic justice. The Scriptures, especially through the prophets, give a more balanced picture. The interests of the Religious Left are centered more tightly around the fate of the poor.

But their policy attentions in that realm are relatively narrow, focusing mostly on welfare and foreign aid. Pragmatism would seem to warrant discussion of a wider set of issues. Christian Libertarians are excited about voluntary displays of charity, but saddened that political shenanigans can so easily swamp the efforts of ompassionate people.

All that said, care for the poor and oppressed is not a strictly Christian exercise. And very few people-Christian or not-are informed about the primary and secondary consequences of significant policy issues. Although Southeast Christian Church can be pleased and honored to pay part of Uncle Sam’s tax bill for the Sri Lankans, perhaps all of us should pay more attention to the larger issues of trade protectionism and the mechanics of economic justice.

St. Louis Christian College Reduces Tuition Costs

(PRWEB) February 16, 2005

In a bold move designed to provide access to students wanting to prepare for ministry, Saint Louis Christian College (SLCC) will begin offering full-tuition scholarships for residential, full-time students. SLCC has been equipping men and women for ministry in church-related vocations since 1956.

Effective July 1, students who take at least 12 hours per semester and live in campus housing will receive a full-tuition scholarship. They will pay only $ 2,500 each semester for room and board and $ 450 for a student services fee (parking, technology, etc.). Part-time students and full-time commuters will receive a half-tuition scholarship and pay only $ 125 per credit hour plus the $ 450 student services fee each semester.

“We are excited about this because it provides an affordable opportunity for those who want to prepare for ministry. This decision was based on the high cost of a college education coupled with the fact that most of our students enter into ministry upon graduation,” explained Jamie Lankford, Director of Finance. “The salaries for ministry positions are comparatively low, and we don’t want our graduates struggling to pay off their student loans at the time they are striving to be successful in their ministries.”

As part of their academic programs and as preparation for a lifetime of ministry, students will be expected to work ten hours per week. This can be a job on campus, in churches, or in community service. The service in area churches can be a vital learning link between the classroom and their ultimate goal of serving in full-time ministry.

It is anticipated that recruiting costs will be greatly reduced, as the web site will become a major component to communicate the changes to prospective students. In addition, salaries previously paid to students for work performed on campus will be greatly reduced if not eliminated since students will be expected to perform these jobs as part of their academic preparation.

The college has a very active adult evening schedule with the Adults in Ministry program. Two adult programs are offered: a degree-completion program for students with previous college credits and an associate’s program. Students enrolled in this program will also qualify for a full-tuition or half-tuition scholarship depending on whether they are residential and their full/part-time status.

Saint Louis Christian College, located in Florissant, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis, is an accredited institution of higher learning offering two and four-year degrees. Students qualify for Title IV federal financial aid. SLCC is affiliated with the independent Christian churches/churches of Christ. Students can earn bachelor’s degrees in five ministry areas (Preaching Ministry, Worship and Music Ministry, Educational Ministries, Intercultural and Urban Missions, and Christian Ministry). All students major in the Bible. More information about the tuition-free program and the college can be obtained from the website (http://www.slcc4ministry.edu).

Salvation Army Famous Doughnuts Fed WWI and WWII Soldiers, Now Feeds New Generation of Americans Through Kroger Stores

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) February 17, 2005

Unprecedented. That’s the word Salvation Army advisory board member Lee Stiles used to describe the national launch of The Salvation Army Famous Doughnut. “The brand concept went from dream to almost full national distribution in 18 months. That is unprecedented for a new brand to the market,” said Stiles, a longtime bakery operator and consultant to the food industry. “Major well-known food conglomerates can do that, but I doubt a brand new product to the market ever has.”

Starting February 27, Kroger bakeries in Ohio, Indiana, and South Carolina will be distributing the doughnuts to their stores in Alabama, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. The Salvation Army Famous Doughnut first made its debut on the front lines of World War I when a Salvation Army lassie took the meager rations she had and fried them up in a soldier’s helmet.

The Northwest Division of The Salvation Army, headquartered in Seattle, launched the doughnut in Pacific Northwest stores just over one year ago and it took off, garnering loyal fans. Then the work began to take the Famous Doughnut to the rest of the nation. The doughnut is already available in Alaska, California, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. “I guess you could say the product has been in development for 87 years,” Stiles said.

Thanks to Salvation Army leadership across the country, strong partnerships with the baking mix, package, bakery and retail partners, the doughnuts are an opportunity for new visibility and funding for The Salvation Army across the United States. About seven cents for each box of doughnuts sold comes back to the Army to help provide the financial ammunition needed in the battle against homelessness, hopelessness and hunger.

Lt. Colonel Terry Griffin, Northwest divisional commander said, “The Army needed to look at new and innovative ways to fundraise and create visibility, while still staying true to our roots—the Salvation Army Famous Doughnut is exactly that.” Founded in London in 1865 by William and Catherine Booth, The Salvation Army is a Christian church and social service ministry, which provides programs and services to people in need in 109 countries worldwide.

St. Patrick’s Shamrock is No Longer Needed

Erlanger, KY (PRWEB) March 8, 2005

If the book by Christian author Tom Bosse entitled, “The Unveiling of the Trinity” existed in the fifth century; the shamrock would not be the symbol of St. Patrick’s Day. The shamrock is only one of the many traditions and folklore attributed to this patron saint of Ireland. Patrick, born in Wales in AD 387, became bishop of Ireland and died March 17, AD 461. Some credit him with driving out all the snakes from Ireland and even believe he raised people from the dead. Yet, most notable of all his legends is that of the shamrock.

The story of the shamrock depicts Patrick outdoors in a field preaching a sermon about the Trinity. When he came to the point in his message to explain the Trinity, he encountered a loss for words. In his attempt to convey his message as best he could, he happened to look down at a landscape filled with shamrocks. He bent down, picked one up, held it high and challenged his hearers, “Is it one leaf or three?” They replied, “It is both one and three.” Patrick then concluded, “So it is with God.”

St. Patrick’s use of the shamrock soon caught on and paved the way for other analogies to explain the Trinity including the three stages of water and the three parts of an egg. Still, there has never been a crystal-clear answer to Christianity’s most important doctrine and many today still refer to it as a mystery.

Now at the onset of the 21st century much has changed concerning this puzzling doctrine. Indeed, if St. Patrick were alive today he would not need a shamrock to explain the Trinity. In the book “The Unveiling of the Trinity,” the mystery of the Trinity is completely removed assuring that the label of mystery no longer exists. That is the good news. There is a downside to the good news however and that is the task the Christian churches now must face in revising all the documents and manuscripts pertaining to the old doctrine.

The design of the book provides its readers with a clear understanding of the Trinity. The book’s publisher, Tuvott Publishing of Erlanger, Kentucky is encouraged and excited to see the book well received and the impact the book is having around the world, especially in the Middle East. We believe this is one of the most important revelations ever for humanity.

With voices on the increase from those claiming to have the right path to God, this book is a slice of garden-fresh sunshine. Author Tom Bosse does not use hearsay or personal belief, but Old and New Testament Scriptures to show that the Trinity always existed and that Jesus Christ is indeed God in the flesh, the only pathway to the Father.

St. Patrick did the best he could with what he had available in his day. Today, Christian leaders and believers have a choice: they can continue to use shamrocks, or they can get a copy of this book to know and understand the full facts regarding the Trinity.

Tom Bosse is a lay minister, theologian and educator as well as a part-time freelance writer and author. Since his conversion in 1976, he has served in several ministerial and administrative offices. Ten of his thirty years was involvement as a nursing home and hospital ministry director, teaching Bible studies throughout the Northern Kentucky area.

The book is available in bookstores, online stores, http://www.tuvott.com/ and 1-800-431-1579.

Help Young Vietnamese Human Rights Fighters

(PRWEB) March 12, 2005

Under immense pressure from International human rights organizations and freedom-loving nations, the Vietnamese communist government has released a few high profile prisoners of conscience on the Lunar New Year Day. The international community has welcomed this development as a progress on human rights of Vietnamese authorities.

However, this release represents only a tiny fraction of the hundreds of prisoners of conscience still remaining in detention today. Most of them are unknown to the world. Moreover, the released prisoners are always under strict surveillance and deprived of all their due rights, especially right to speech and expression.

The Government of Vietnam continues to commit serious human rights abuses towards its citizens, especially democratic minded and freedom-loving youths. These are three typical cases:

Le Thi Hong Lien, 21 years old, is a voluntary teacher of the Vietnamese Mennonite Christian Church. She was arrested in June 2004 with some other people from the church.

On November 12, 2004 a court sentenced her to 12 months in prison. Amnesty International considered her as a prisoner of conscience. She was so brutally tortured by the prison guards that she was severely damaged both physically and mentally.

Lan Anh, a reporter for Tuoi Tre “Youth” magazine, was recently prosecuted by the Ministry of Public Security for “appropriation of state confidential documents.” In a series of articles from October 2003 to May 2004, she detailed the corrupt practices of the Zuellig Pharma Company in collaboration with corrupted officials in destabilizing the Vietnamese drug market.

Do Nam Hai, pen name Phuong Nam, a bank professional, was detained and his computer confiscated in December 2004 for posting pro-democratic literature on the Internet. He was frequently harassed by local authorities, and recently fired from his job after he refused to cease his pro-democratic activities.

Facing this aggravating human rights situation, VNHRN raises a serious warning and calls on Vietnam government to immediately release Le Thi Hong Lien, and cease all forms of harassment and intimidation against the journalist Lan Anh and Mr. Phuong Nam. They also ask international community to pressure on Vietnam to improve its human rights practices.

Independent Old Catholics Recognise Women are Equal in Christ

(PRWEB) March 16, 2005

First there was the uproar over ordaining female priests, now the arguments against the ordination of women Bishops grow daily and is usually supported by theologians using one translation of Biblical references concerning `headship.’ “Christ is the head of every man and the husband is the head of his wife and God is the head of Christ.”

1 Cotinthians 11:13

The Most Reverend Archbishop Gary Beaver of The Interdenominational Church of the Holy Lands made an official statement on behalf of the Independent Old Catholic denomination in full support of women in all offices of the church “ The gift of Calling and serving the church community is not and should not be a question of gender” Archbishop goes on to state “ Many have stated that there are also political reasons supporting arguments against female Bishops and women in the church, which only goes to prove that we should worship God in our churches and not politics.”

Many see that allowing women to become Priests and Bishops is a novelty within the Church in the last 50 years. Not only is it an historical novelty it is still confined to a fairly small proportion of Christian churches.

Christ made women’s ordination possible when he revoked the Old Testament priesthood of Aaron and brought both men and women into a new convenant; into a new priesthood through baptism. “All of you are children of God through faith in Christ Jesus. All of you who have been baptized in Christ, have clothed yourselves in Christ. Thus there is no longer Jew nor Greek, free nor slave, male nor female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3,27-28.

The ordination to the priesthood is a fuller participation in baptism’s sacrificial and prophetic gifts. Christ replaced a priesthood based on the sacred by a priesthood based on grace; a universal priesthood shared by all the baptised. This priesthood is given through the sacrament of baptism, and baptism is the same whether for a man or a woman.

Archbishop Gary Beaver has long rallied for women Bishops, and has been focusing on the relevant New Testament texts and their implications for the theology of the episcopate, in many cases totally refuting the references to Scripture used by those against women in senior clerical office.

Archbishop Gary raised the human rights issue of many churches continuing to discriminate against its own clergy, and asked how they can explain this in their mission.

The Independent Old Catholic denomination calls for all churches to consider a proposal to amend their canon law so that all references to gender are removed from the criteria for the selection of bishops.
